“let’s start a conversation about conservation “
People, passion and place we believe are what local produce is all about. Our family business producing wild venison from Dartmoor is a way of life for us, not a job, it involves our whole family and connects us very closely to Dartmoor and the traditional local communities around us. Producing the finest quality Dartmoor venison follows our philosophy which is simple, old fashioned, tried and tested. The links between sustainable land management, great food and a community who understands local producers are embedded in our history however it’s fair to say may have been forgotten over the last few decades. Our aim is to inspire our local communities to revert to simpler way of sourcing their food where they take the time, to talk to and understand their local producers starting a conversation about conservation which we believe can have a long lasting and substantial effect on increasing biodiversity through agriculture across the British countryside.
Ethical meat from Dartmoor
Wild venison is arguably the best example of a high welfare, sustainable and environmentally produced red meat not to mention virtually fat free and incredibly healthy. It’s is the end product of deer management carried out in the British countryside to protect both the environment and the quality and structure within the resident deer populations. The free ranging life of the wild deer on Dartmoor provides them with the very best variety of seasonal forage and through this develop a depth of flavour unlike any other red meat.
Professional deer management and consultancy
As professional deer managers we are working towards the goal of restoring deer population densities to a level where natural processes can happen in our woodlands and countryside and that means culling the deer to ensure their impact on the ecosystem is at a level that allows biodiversity. Over grazing and browsing of insect food plants by deer has a massive negative effect on biodiversity and we are faced with a very serious conservation issue surrounding this due to increasing deer numbers across the British Isles. Here on Dartmoor we have a wide range of habitats to protect and conserve from ancient oak woodland through to open moor and it’s adjoining farmland. The burden of deer across these habitats is shared by land owners, farmers and foresters. By the very nature of a deers daily and seasonal movements they cause real problems across the whole landscape. The deer are culled In the field with a rifle and selected first and foremost with the deer management plan in mind. In most cases this is based on population reduction however we also have to ensure the correct structure and balance is maintained in the deer herd to allow their “natural processes to happen” as well as those in the wider ecosystem through increased biodiversity.
